Dehorning Livestock

Dehorning / Disbudding is the process of removing the horn buds from a young animal, before they develop into horns. The best time for Dehorning is between week 3 and 8, but it may vary from breed to breed. The height of the young horn bud should not be more than 1cm.

Why dis-bud or de-horn?

  • Safety: Horned animals can pose a safety risk to both humans and other animals, as they can use their horns to inflict serious injuries. Dehorning can help reduce the risk of accidental injury or aggression.
  • Health: Horns can sometimes become infected or injured, leading to pain and other health problems for the animal. Removing the horns can help prevent these issues.
  • Management: Horns can make it difficult to handle, transport and manage animals, as they can get caught in fences and other equipment. Dehorning can make it easier to handle animals for tasks such as veterinary procedures or transportation.

Portasol Dehorner 111 Features.

  • The dehorner 111’s working head has increased strength with the addition of a 20mm stainless steel tube flame housing. Resulting in the dehorner 111’s front end being much stronger and robust.
  • The dehorner 111 has a new ignition system featuring both click to ignite and now new manual ignition.
  • The new dehorner also features a new robust durable mechanically held ceramic offering far superior protection to the ceramic.
  • The Dehorner 111 is now customer serviceable.
    • If the Jet becomes blocked the user can change the jet easily himself.
    • The operator can also change the ceramic in the unlikely event that this somehow gets damaged.
  • The Dehorner 111 has two tips sizes available , tips come in 15 & 18.5mm size.
  • The working head of the New Dehorner 111 has far superior heat retaining properties than the last version of the Dehorner enabling the farmer to dehorn with greater speed and ease.

Portasol Calf Dehorner III comes fitted with a standard 15mm copper tip and is packed in a heavy duty storage box complete with full instructions.

NOTES ON CALF DISBUDDING AND DEHORNING

Removing the pre-emergent horn (debudding) is the most humane and efficient way to eliminate horn tissue in calves. This method of dehorning both kills horn growth and controls bleeding by cauterising the blood vessels while minimising potential of infection.

We recommend applying some local anaesthetic to the horn area before disbudding and administering antiseptic spray to the wound area. The use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs helps to reduce the pain associated with disbudding.
