Introduction

ONE-PUFF™

The two part Aspiration/Resuscitation instrument for newborn companion animals

One Puff from McCulloch Medical is a two-part Aspiration/Resuscitation instrument to clear breathing pathways and stimulate the first breaths of newborn puppies, kittens and other small companion animals. It is not uncommon for puppies and kittens to be born with clogged breathing passages, especially after C-section births, which can be life threatening if not treated immediately. One Puff is a non-invasive instrument that can be used safely by veterinarians or pet owners without fear of causing irreparable harm to the newborn.

Instructions

One Puff™ is a controlled system that performs a specific function depending on the mask used. The

Aspiration mask "A" is designed to administer a safe vacuum suction to remove mucus from the animal, while the

Respiration mask "B" is designed to provide a small release of air to stimulate respiratory response.

One Puff™ has been tested to consistently deliver 5 to 10 ml of air pressure using either mask – a level proven to be safe for newborn puppies, kittens and other small animals.

How to use One Puff™

If Aspirating:

  • To test the Aspiration mask, use end with the mask marked letter "A." You should experience a slight vacuum when holding the pre-assembled unit against your arm while pumping.
  • If animal is not breathing after delivery, pick animal up gently with head facing downward at a 45° to 90° angle from the horizon.
  • Place mask securely over muzzle, making sure the muzzle is clearly in position to receive the air movement. When secure, pull trigger once to aspirate the animal.
  • Gently massage the thoracic area behind the front legs in front of the stomach. Check for breathing reflex. If no breathing occurs, proceed to resuscitation instructions.

If Resuscitating:

  • To test the Resuscitation mask, use end with the mask marked letter "B." You should experience a slight release of air when holding the pre-assembled unit against your arm while pumping.
  • Place mask securely over muzzle, making sure the muzzle is clearly in position to receive the air movement.
  • Compress trigger once and remove mask, continue to massage the chest gently. Allow a few moments to establish respiratory reflex.
  • If no breathing reflex is achieved, repeat resuscitation process.

DO NOT pump continuously as this could have a detrimental effect on the newborn. Only one or two puffs are necessary for stimulation of the respiratory response.

Prior to using One Puff, clean product in 1:20 bleach/water solution and dry thoroughly.
