Reproduction programs are a very important part of any dairy or beef enterprise and reproductive success depends largely on accurate heat detection. ESTROTECT™ Heat Detectors provide Mounting Evidence; One of the best ways to detect heat is to see evidence of a cow being mounted
How do ESTROTECT™ Heat Detectors work?

Self-adhesive Heat Detectors are placed between the hip and tail head.
The silver scratch-off surface is removed via friction each time a cow is mounted.
This gradual removal indicates the advancing stages of heat.
The more colour that is showing the closer the cow is to standing heat and less chance of an incorrect false positive (cows not in heat).
Benefits of Heat Detection

By increasing heat detection rates from 50% to 75% and having a conception rate of 50% you can reduce the calving index of each pregnant cow by 21 days! If your conception rates are below 50%, then the benefit of ESTROTECT™ will be even greater!
Using ESTROTECT™ will help maximize heat detection in your herd, improving fertility, reducing calving index and the number of barren cows culled.
How to Use and Apply ESTROTECT™

Keep Heat Detectors Warm
The detector should be warmed to 100 degrees F or 38 degrees C immediately prior to application. This activates the adhesive and provides instant adhesion at lower temperatures. This can be done numerous ways including putting next to your skin until they are soft and flexible. For large quantities, put the detectors in a small cooler with a hot water bottle or other heat source.

Site of Application
Ideal location for placement on the cow is between the hip and tail head with ESTROTECT™ evenly spaced perpendicular to the spine.

Brush Hair Thoroughly
Create optimal conditions for adhesion by vigorously brushing the coat in the area you’ll place the heat detector – across the backbone on the back half of the cow. Brush with the grain of the hair to remove dirt, dust and shedding/molting hair.
Note: Protect detectors from tail flicking by placing them near the top of the tail when fly counts are high.

Clean the Hair
Clean the surface area with an ESTROTECT™ cloth to completely remove any remaining dirt, dust or sand or sawdust.
As with brushing, wipe with the grain of the hair and fold the cleaning cloth as needed.

Heat Detector Application
Place heat detector on the application site, press down firmly and rub into hair with bare fingers. Do not apply in rainy weather.
Heat Detection Tips

Heat detection requires thorough observation regardless of which aid you choose to use. To help ensure success, follow these tips.
Observe the cows for 30 minutes twice a day, early in the morning and early in the evening. Consider observations at noon when mounting activity is high.
Observe cows away from the feeding area.
Hot weather, high production, crowded conditions or high stress environments may curtail mounting activity. Adjust your observations accordingly.
Cows in standing heat average about 1.5 mounts per hour and are in heat 6-8 hours at most.
Cows in pre-heat may bawl, be restless or sniff, lick or head butt other cattle.
